What notes are the four strings of a fiddle usually tuned to?

Are there alternate tunings that are often used? Is the standard fiddle tuning the same as a violin? What about a Viola?

I think Wikipedia can be trusted for something like this. Its entry for "fiddle" says: "The term fiddle may refer to any bowed string musical instrument, usually the violin."

On the right side of the article about the violin, you see this picture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Range_violin.png

If I'm understanding it correctly, the four stemless quarter notes on the left indicate the notes the four strings are tuned to: G, D, A, and E.

I've never heard of anyone tuning a violin differently from the standard tuning, the way they do for guitar, but I suppose it would be possible.

The viola is apparently a fifth lower. If you're not used to reading alto clef, the middle line is middle C, so that's C, G, D, A.

Standard tuning, apparently, is GDAE.
